Laminate Flooring

Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring gives you oak, hickory or walnut with a wear layer that resists scratches, dents and sun fading better than the wood it copies — from $1.55 per square foot, direct at wholesale pricing.

Two specs narrow the field fast. The AC rating says how much traffic the floor takes: AC3 covers a normal home, AC4 handles entryways and kitchens. The core says which rooms it can go in, and a waterproof core opens up the wet ones. Order free samples and look at the emboss in person — it is the difference a screen cannot show you.

Read two specs and the shortlist writes itself

Laminate is judged on the AC rating and the core. Everything else is preference.

AC rating — how much traffic it takes

  • AC1–AC2 — light residential. Bedrooms and low-traffic rooms only.
  • AC3 — the standard for general residential use. Handles everyday family traffic.
  • AC4 — heavy residential and light commercial. Worth the small step up for entryways, living rooms and kitchens.
  • AC5–AC6 — commercial grade.

For most homes AC3 is the floor and AC4 is the sensible buy.

Core — which rooms it can go in

A standard fibreboard core swells if water sits on it, which rules out bathrooms and laundry rooms. A water-resistant core tolerates spills wiped up promptly. A waterproof core opens up the wet rooms and puts laminate on the same footing as vinyl for moisture.

Laminate against the alternatives

Versus hardwood. Laminate costs significantly less, installs faster, and resists scratches and sun fading better. It cannot be refinished — when the wear layer is gone the floor is replaced. Hardwood adds more resale value and can be sanded several times over its life. For rentals, flips and budget-led projects laminate wins on maths; for a forever home, hardwood still wins on value retained.

Versus luxury vinyl plank. They look similar and behave differently. LVP is waterproof throughout and softer and quieter underfoot. Laminate often looks more convincing at the same price, because a deeper emboss and a higher-resolution print layer read better in daylight, and it resists denting better. For dry living space laminate competes hard. For a kitchen, bathroom or basement, choose waterproof laminate or LVP.

Installing it

Most laminate is click-lock and floats over the subfloor with no nails and no glue, over most existing hard surfaces. Two things decide whether it stays flat: a clean, level subfloor, and a consistent expansion gap around the whole perimeter. Skipping the expansion gap is the single most common cause of laminate buckling months after a good-looking install.

Keeping it

Sweep or vacuum often — fine grit acts like sandpaper on the wear layer. Clean with a barely damp mop and a laminate-safe cleaner. Never use a steam mop, standing water or an oil-based cleaner. Furniture pads and entry mats do more for the life of a laminate floor than anything you can buy in a bottle.

Before you order

Emboss depth and print realism are the two things a screen cannot show you, and they are exactly what separates a laminate that reads as wood from one that does not. Order free samples, put them on the floor of the actual room, and look at them in daylight and under lamps. A BuildDirect flooring expert will then work out the boxes including waste, match the trims and quote the freight — at no cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is laminate flooring?
Laminate flooring is a multi-layer synthetic product that mimics the look of hardwood, stone, or tile through a high-resolution photographic layer sealed beneath a clear protective wear layer. Beneath the image layer is a dense fiberboard core that provides structure and stability. Laminate is one of the most popular flooring options for homeowners who want the aesthetic of hardwood at a more accessible price point, with better resistance to scratches and fading than real wood in many cases.
How does laminate flooring compare to hardwood?
Laminate costs significantly less than hardwood, installs more easily, and resists scratches and fading better in high-traffic or sun-exposed spaces. The tradeoff is that laminate cannot be refinished -- once the wear layer is gone, the floor needs to be replaced. Hardwood adds more long-term resale value, has a more authentic look and feel underfoot, and can be sanded and refinished multiple times over its lifetime. For budget-conscious projects or rental properties, laminate is a strong performer. For long-term investment in a primary residence, hardwood remains the premium choice.
How does laminate flooring compare to luxury vinyl plank?
Laminate and LVP look similar but differ in key ways. Most standard laminate has a fiberboard core that swells when exposed to moisture, making it unsuitable for wet areas. LVP is 100% waterproof throughout. LVP also tends to be softer and quieter underfoot. However, laminate often looks more realistic than LVP at the same price point due to its embossed texture and photographic layer technology, and it typically offers better dent resistance. For dry living spaces, laminate competes well. For kitchens, bathrooms, or basements, waterproof laminate or LVP is the safer choice.
What AC rating should I look for in laminate flooring?
The AC (Abrasion Class) rating measures a laminate floor's resistance to wear and is the most important durability spec to check. AC1 and AC2 are rated for light residential use in low-traffic rooms. AC3 is the standard for general residential use and handles everyday family traffic well. AC4 is rated for heavy residential and light commercial use, making it a good choice for entryways, living rooms, and kitchens. AC5 is commercial grade. For most homes, AC3 is the minimum to look for and AC4 is worth the modest step up in price.
Is laminate flooring easy to install?
Yes. Most laminate flooring uses a click-lock system that makes it one of the more DIY-friendly flooring formats available. Planks float over the subfloor without nails or glue and can be installed over most existing hard surfaces. The main requirements are a flat, clean subfloor and proper underlayment. Maintaining consistent expansion gaps around the perimeter of the room is critical -- skipping this step is the most common cause of laminate buckling after installation.
How do I maintain laminate flooring?
Sweep or vacuum regularly to keep grit off the surface, as fine particles act like sandpaper on the wear layer over time. Clean with a slightly damp mop and a laminate-safe cleaner -- never use excess water, steam mops, or oil-based cleaners, which can cause swelling and damage the finish. Wipe up spills promptly. Use furniture pads and entry mats in high-traffic areas. Laminate cannot be refinished, so protecting the wear layer through consistent maintenance is the most important thing you can do to extend the floor's life.
Can I try laminate flooring samples before I buy?
Yes. BuildDirect offers free samples so you can evaluate color, texture, and finish in your actual space before placing a full order. Laminate products vary significantly in emboss depth and realism, and those details are much easier to assess in person than on a screen. Order a few options and compare them side by side in the room before making a final decision.
Is laminate flooring the same as fake wood or faux wood flooring?
Yes — 'fake wood flooring' and 'faux wood flooring' are everyday names for the same thing. Laminate reproduces wood with a high-resolution photographic layer under a clear wear layer, and the surface is embossed so the texture lines up with the grain in the image. On a good laminate the emboss follows the printed grain exactly, which is why a close look and a hand on the surface tell you more than a photograph does. Luxury vinyl plank is the other floor sold under the same nicknames; it is waterproof throughout, where standard laminate is not.
How much does laminate flooring cost per square foot?
Laminate flooring on BuildDirect runs from $1.55 to $4.59 per square foot, with most colours around $3.51. What moves the price is the AC rating, the thickness, whether the core is water resistant or fully waterproof, and the plank format — a herringbone or an extra-long board costs more than a standard plank in the same collection. Every product page shows the price per square foot next to the price per box, and the coverage calculator converts your room size into boxes including the waste factor.
Should I buy 8mm, 10mm or 12mm laminate?
Thickness affects how solid the floor feels and sounds underfoot, not how well it resists wear — that is the AC rating's job. An 8mm plank over good underlayment on a flat subfloor performs well and costs less. A 12mm plank feels more substantial, sounds less hollow and is more forgiving of a subfloor that is not perfectly flat. If your subfloor is level and your budget is tight, 8mm with a quality underlayment is the better use of the money; if the room echoes or the slab is uneven, go thicker.
Can I buy laminate flooring wholesale or in bulk?
Yes. BuildDirect sells direct at wholesale pricing with no minimum order. Contractors, builders, landlords and multi-family renovators can join BuildDirect PRO for volume pricing, a dedicated account team and freight coordination on larger orders. For a whole building or a multi-unit turnover, ask for a quote instead of ordering box by box.
